I usually do a pastel by first starting with an under-painting of acrylic. This time I laid down a pastel background and then painted over it with turpenoid to blur it. After that dried I began to place the pastel over it.
This somewhat playful piece evokes a feeling of calm while illustrating the coming of evening. The oncoming car's headlights are peeking through the beat-up old metal barrier that you so often see on the Merritt. I enjoyed illustrating that barrier in this pastel because it highlights the age of the parkway and reminds me of days gone by.
